Injury
Information - Nerve Damage

Nerve
damage is a leading cause of pain and suffering if you
have been injured in an accident involving back or neck injuries in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Unfortunately, nerve damage and nerve injuries are often
permanent. Neurologists are the primary doctors that
diagnose and recommend treatment for nerve injuries in
Bucks County, Mercer County, and Philadelphia.
Nerve damage is usually permanent.
Find out the ways to treat your nerve injuries.
Nerve
injuries are usually caused by compression on the spine
as a result of a traumatic injury such as a car
accident, truck accident, or motorcycle accident. The
bones of the spine, known as vertebrae, are separated by
spinal discs. Nerve endings are nerves that come out of
the spinal cord and communicate with the rest of the
body. When the spine, including the vertebrae, is
quickly and forcefully shifted due to the extreme forces
of a car accident, the spinal discs become misshapen and
press on the nerve endings causing pain and interference
with the electrical messages coming from the brain, down
the spinal cord to each individual body part.
Damage
to the nerves coming out of the spinal cord (nerve
endings) usually results in pain traveling down the arms
or legs to the hands, fingers, feet and toes. Numbness
and tingling in the hands and feet are also signs of
nerve damage. The medical term for this type of
interference is called a radiculopathy. Radiculopathy
is diagnosed clinically by an injured person’s symptoms
and certain tests performed by orthopedic doctors and
neurologists. EMG tests and nerve conduction tests are
medical tests used to diagnose nerve damage by measuring
the speed and other factors of electrical impulses,
which are sent by a machine though the body by the
neurologist.
Once
nerve damage is diagnosed by a neurologist, he or she
will recommend a course of medical treatment to
alleviate the symptoms caused by the nerve damage.
Physical therapy, chiropractic manipulations, and
injections into the site of the nerve damage are
commonly prescribed to treat nerve damage caused by a
car accident.
